Winter deaths scandal
Highest rate for 42 years sparks calls for Tory minister to resign
UNDER FIRE Ms Perry THE number of excess winter deaths in 2017/18 was the highest for 42 years.
Campaigners say too little is being done to keep old people warm and safe, and that Energy Minister Claire Perry should quit.
There were 50,100 excess deaths in England and Wales last winter, according to the Office for National Statistics. It said the increase was partly down to flu and below-average temperatures.
Deaths were highest among over-85s. Age UK said high energy prices, poor housing and ill health can make winter dangerous for many elderly people.
The National Pensioners Convention said: “Successive governments have ignored the problem of winter deaths among the older population.” There are fears this winter will bring more misery due to energy price hikes.
Ofgem has also increased a price cap that was supposed to protect millions of the poorest households. The annual rise of £47 means people may be paying up to £1,136 for gas and electric.
