Cops called after teacher’s home experiment explodes

A SCIENCE teacher was arrested after a botched chemistry experiment in his garden caused a huge blast. in welding – on his patio. His family claim he wanted to inspire students and blamed the explosion on adverse weather.

But police in gas masks swooped on his home in Girton, Cambs, and evacuated neighbours. The teacher was held on suspicion of an offence under the Explosives Act and spent two days in custody.

His daughter, who asked not to be named, said: “It had been raining and there was a bit more moisture in the air which is why it made a bigger bang.” The teacher had phoned police to warn them neighbours may have reported a blast.
