PULIS LIFT OFF BORO FUN BOYS

- BY IAN MURTAGH

TONY PULIS claims Middlesbrough’s mean machines are game for a laugh.

It’s a clash of styles at the Riverside this evening when his immovable objects meet free-scoring Aston Villa’s irresistible force.

But if Boro – boasting the best defensive record in English football – often give the impression of being boring and ruthlessly efficient, grinding out a succession of low-scoring wins, Pulis (above) insists appearances can be deceptive.

His squad have been throwing themselves into the pre-Christmas spirit by turning up for training in fancy dress – and Pulis finds it all hilarious. He also believes it provides evidence of Boro’s burgeoning team spirit.

“When I first came here, it was very divided at times,” said Pulis. “But we’re starting to get close to what I’ve always wanted at all my clubs.

“They had to come in the worst tracksuit in the world yesterday and the other day, everybody had to turn up as a sportsman.

“It’s been fun, they’re getting that spirit.”
