This is my maternal grandfather Alexander Kerr who was a prisoner of war at Merseburg, Germany, during the First World War where this photo was taken. It was an assembly camp for 25,000 prisoners from which men were drafted into work. He died not long after the war from the effects of mustard gas poisoning, leaving my grandmother a young widow with a baby. My grandmother also suffered the loss of two of her young brothers during the 1916 Battle of the Somme, one aged just 18.
