Jose demands players give everything for the United cause.. or they are being ‘dishonest’

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

JOSE MOURINHO has accused any Manchester United player not giving their all for him and the club of being “dishonest.”

Struggling United host Arsenal tonight and could find themselves 11 points adrift in the race for a topfour place if they lose at Old Trafford. Mourinho has publicly criticised his under-performing stars and claimed “some players care more than others” as he battles to haul them out of their current crisis.

But ahead of their latest crunch game, Mourinho said he retains the backing of his squad – and said: “If

FROM BACK PAGE you think a player only plays when, in your words, ‘He is behind the manager’, what I have to call these players or, in this case, what you are calling them, is dishonest.

“A football player is very well paid to be professional. What is that? It’s to train every day to his limits, to play every game to his limits, to behave socially according to the nature of his job, to respect the millions of fans around the world and to respect the hierarchies of the club.

“If a player doesn’t do that, one thing is to perform well and not so Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 11 home Premier League games against Arsenal (W8 D3), since a 1-0 loss in September 2006. Arsenal have scored more than once in only three of their last 39 league fixtures at Old Trafford – and they have lost all three of those games (4-2 in November 1984, 8-2 in August 2011 and 3-2 in February 2016). Arsenal have lost their last three midweek Premier League games (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), conceding three goals in each defeat (v Swansea, Manchester City and Leicester last season). well, another thing is to be a football professional.

“If you say a player plays well or bad because of how good a manager is, you are calling him dishonest.

“When pundits, who were professional players, say this player is not playing for the manager, did they do that when they were MARCO SILVA claims Everton want to make Andre Gomes’s loan move from Barcelona permanent.

The Portugal midfielder has been outstanding since he was introduced into the team in October after recovering from his hamstring injury.

Silva would like to keep him but he knows Everton need Barcelona‘s agreement – and the midfielder has a £90million buy-out clause.

“There are three parts to the deal – us, Andre and Barcelona,” said the Everton boss.

“We have to go step by step and in the right moment. Of course, our owner and our board will find the right moment to try to do something and will do everything we can to achieve it, but it is not just in our hands.”

And Silva said if it was up to him, Portuguese compatriot Gomes would be a true Blue already.

“If it was in our hands we would move faster because it is impossible to be more happy with Andre than we are right now,” he said.

“Everything he has done, from his performances to how he has settled as a man and as a professional, has been quality.”
