Cops detect a ‘terror risk’

TWO men on a treasure hunt were swooped on by armed police and a helicopter, after their spades were mistaken for rifles.

Officers leapt out of bushes to grab the men, who were dressed in camouflage and carrying shovels in waterproof bags.

The 999 caller mistook them for long barrels.

His co-star Charlie Lawson, who plays Jim McDonald, wrote: “It’s with great sadness, I’ve to tell you my great old friend Pete Armitage has died.” Peter, whose last foray into Corrie ended in 2013, had battled bowel cancer. The cause of his death is yet to be made public.

In remission in 2014, he said: “I’d like to get back. It’s 30 years since I started on the cobbles. I’ve always come in and out.”

McDonald, said: “I loved Pete, RIP lovely man.” Jane Danson added: “So sorry to hear this, lovely man.” And Georgia Taylor (Toyah Battersby) posted: “Charlie. He was lovely.”

Peter first appeared in the soap in 1984, returning 10 years later before being written out in 1997 when Bill ran off to Germany with Fred Elliott’s wife

Maureen. He returned many times and in 2006 began a passionate affair with Audrey Roberts (pictured left).

By 2013, Bill was back in Germany. Kevin (Michael le Vell), left the soap to care for Bill.

Peter also had parts in Holby City, Hearts and Minds, Jack the Ripper and Magic Grandad.

He is survived by his children Danny and Sally.
