Millions in a fury over O2 mobile data meltdown

- BY LAURA FORSYTH

FRUSTRATED Mobile user UP to 32 million furious mobile users spent a day without 4G data after a software glitch hit O2.

The company, which has 25 million customers, said voice calls were not affected but some people reported being unable to make calls or send texts either.

Spanish-owned O2 also provides coverage for seven million Sky, Tesco, Giffgaff and Lycamobile users, who were also hit.

Last night boss Mark Evans apologised for the “poor experience” and said things would be back to normal by this morning.

The problem is believed to have been caused by software provided by phone giant Ericsson.

The glitch also knocked out London bus live information displays and businesses struggled as payment terminals using the network went down.

Alex Neill of Which? magazine said: “Millions will have been quite rightly angry and frustrated.

“Your mobile is an integral part of being able to live and work, so it is very worrying one of the world’s biggest networks failed for so long and without any real explanation.”
