1990: Record-breaking National Hunt trainer Martin Pipe saddled the 1,000th winner of his career when Catch The Cross won at Kempton.

1990: The smallest crowd – 625 people – ever to watch a Fourth Division match turned out to see Scarboroug­h take on Wrexham at Seamer Road.

1997: Former Leeds and Scotland midfielder Billy Bremner died at the age of 54.

1999: The qualifying groups for the 2002 World Cup were drawn in Tokyo. England came up against Germany – the side who knocked them out of Euro 96 – as well as Finland, Greece and Albania. England famously beat Germany 5-1 in Munich in September 2001.
