Game of the week
Fallout 76 £59.99 / Xbox One, PS4, PC ★★★
This is a role-playing FPS like the last three versions, but the latest instalment is online only – and the only human ‘survivors’ you meet are controlled by other players.
This is quite a baffling move from Bethesda, a games developer known for huge single playeronly expansive epics with great plots, deep characters and rich storytelling. While the game has the feel of Fallout, this huge detailed world just feels hollow without the characters and settlements that enriched previous titles. While completing a lot of quests, I often began to wonder what the point of it all was. The best thing about Fallout 76 is the huge detailed wilderness to explore. If you’re a Fallout fan you’ll be familiar enough with the story and mechanics to enjoy it.
But if this is your first foray or you are expecting a game like Fallout 4, you might want to wait for a few updates and hope that they fill out the world a bit more with personality and story.
