People’s Vote backers row about tactics
SECOND referendum campaigners are at odds over gambling on MPs to back another EU vote.
The anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats tabled an amendment to Tuesday’s vote on the Brexit deal with calls for a “people’s vote”, with remaining an option.
But People’s Vote campaigners said the move was “deeply unhelpful”.
The group wants it voted on if the Brexit deal is rejected, meaning it would get “maximum support” in the Commons.
But Lib Dem Tom Brake said: “We are proud to have tabled an amendment which, if passed, would ensure the people get the final say on Brexit.”
Meanwhile, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell dismissed Unite leader Len McCluskey’s warning that a second poll would be seen as a betrayal by voters.
Mr McDonnell said, if all else fails, “I think people will recognise we would have no other option but to consider another public vote”.
