Warden faces sex case trial

A PRISON officer is to be tried over allegedly inciting or having sex with 12 women convicts.

David Whitfield pleaded not guilty at Durham crown court to misconduct in public office.

The 34-year-old, of South Shields, South Tyneside, worked at Low Newton women’s maximum-security jail, County Durham.

The judge said the 12 women would be “witnesses”, not complainants. Whitfield was granted bail.
