Man held over girl snatch bid at Christmas fair

-

POLICE are quizzing a suspect after a man tried to snatch a six-year-old girl at a Christmas fair.

The man tried to lure her away with sweets and toys on Saturday afternoon, detectives said.

He was not known to the youngster and had mingled with stallholders offering treats to children in Egham, Surrey. Witnesses said the girl’s mother realised what was happening and stopped her daughter walking off.

Surrey Police said a 47-year-old man was held on suspicion of attempted child abduction. A spokesman said: “Although scared, the child was not physically harmed. Officers were on the scene within minutes and arrested the man.”

Town councillor Yvonna Lay, 64, said around 500 people were visiting the fair at the time.

She said: “So many people were offering kids sweets... he’s probably been very clever about it.”
