First womb transplant ‘next year’
BRITAIN’S first womb transplant will take place in February, a surgeon has revealed.
Consultant gynaecologist Richard Smith said he is in the final stages of selecting one of 50 women shortlisted.
A woman born without a womb, or whose womb is not viable, will get the op at Churchill Hospital in Oxford.
Mr Smith said: “We would hope to Roger as a joey commence our programme early in the new year, we would hope February.”
The UK has fallen behind other countries due to red tape and lack of funding – despite spearheading much of the research into womb transplants.
Charity Womb Transplant UK hopes to fund 15 of the £30,000 ops but currently only has funding for three.
