More help for police

■ The lack of police on our streets, coupled with the utter contempt these knife-wielding gangs have for our justice system, could only ever have one result – a massive increase in knife crime on our streets (Mirror, Dec 6).

The bottom line is thugs don’t fear detection or consequences if they are caught wielding these deadly weapons in public.

The solution is simple, more police on our streets and an increase in stop and search, and more severe penalties for those caught with knives. It’s time this Government stopped this wave of fear spreading on our streets. Roger Grant Thurnscoe, South Yorks
