Torvill and Dean back on screens

HERE’S a re-creation of one of the most magical moments in Olympic ice skating. On the left actors Will Tudor, 31, and Poppy Lee Friar, 23, playing Torvill and Dean, perform the skating legend’s heart-stopping Bolero routine. Some 24 million British viewers watched the iconic 1984 ice dance which won Christopher and Jayne Olympic gold at the Sarajevo Games.

A two-hour ITV biopic, Torvill & Dean, also starring Anita Dobson, Stephen Tompkinson and Jamie Winstone, airs on Christmas Day.

It explores the 40-odd year relationship between Christoper, 60, and Jayne, 61, who many fans still wrongly assume are a romantic couple, despite them both having other partners.

The pair admit they were so focused on their careers they put romance to one side, despite once sharing a kiss. Jayne told Radio Times: “People say that we act like an old married couple, so I’m sure we could have ended up together.

“But during that period when you start dating, we were absorbed in our skating.” Christopher added: “There is still a romance, though. I love Jayne. But in a passionate friend way.”
