9 genes clue behind rarity of ginger hair

- BY MARK WAGHORN

RED HEAD Prince Harry GINGER hair is down to nine key genes – not one as had been thought – which is why only onein-50 people are redheads.

The findings could lead to advances in medicine and forensic science.

About 160 million of the world’s eight billion are ginger. Previously it was thought the root cause was the MC1R gene inherited from both parents.

A study of nearly 350,000 Brits’ DNA found variations in nearly 200 genes linked to blondes and brunettes.

The work could help build more accurate photofits of crime suspects.

Ginger hair has been linked to higher risk of skin cancer and Parkinson’s.

Prof Albert Tenesa, of Edinburgh University, said: “This work has unravelled most genetic variations.”
