Brit OAPs, 70 and 72, caught with ‘4 suitcases of cocaine’
TWO Brits in their 70s have been arrested on a cruise liner after cocaine worth nearly £2million was allegedly found in their luggage.
Officers said 20lb of the drug was hidden in false bottoms in four suitcases in the duo’s cabin.
A man, aged 72, and a woman, 70, are being held in separate jails in Portugal after the raid while the ship was docked in the capital Lisbon.
They were arrested on suspicion of drugs trafficking and have appeared in court as the probe continues. The 33-night voyage, starting at the London Cruise Terminal in Tilbury, Essex, took in the West Indies.
Vitor Ananais, who led the bust by Portuguese officers, said: “We believe the couple were given the drugs in a Caribbean island.” He added: “They are English but [live] in another European country.”
Police are thought to have acted after a tip-off from the UK’s National Crime Agency.
The ship, the MS Marco Polo, is operated by British firm Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which said it does not tolerate criminal activity. The vessel returned to Tilbury on schedule. VOYAGE A cruise ship in Lisbon
