Angry MP’s praised for mace grab
A LABOUR MP who snatched the Commons’ mace in protest against the ditching of the Brexit vote has been applauded by Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell.
Lloyd Russell-Moyle provoked anger by lifting the 5ft, 17th century ornamental staff – a symbol of Royal power.
McDonnell, then a backbencher, was the last MP to grab it, during a 2009 debate on Heathrow expansion.
He was given a five-day suspension from the Commons. Mr McDonnell said of the Brighton Kemptown MP’s stunt: “I thought he did it very skilfully – he’s a bigger bloke than me.”
