Exes put third of mums in debt
Dad Stuart OVER a third of separated mothers are in debt because their ex-partners have not paid child maintenance, a survey shows.
Some 39% of mums rely on loans or overdrafts, and a quarter get no regular financial help from their children’s father.
Half said their ex’s contribution doesn’t cover bills, leaving them £3,264 a year short on average, and 88% fear homelessness as they struggle with housing costs.
Of 1,000 mums with custody polled by law firm Slater and Gordon, 62% want official maintenance calculations to rise.
The company’s Hannah Cornish said: “Amounts suggested often don’t cover half the housing costs of parent and child.”
