‘Scrooge’ OAP caught on CCTV cutting down Christmas lights

- BY LUCY THORNTON

A DAD was stunned after an elderly woman sneaked into his garden and chopped down the Christmas lights.

The pensioner was caught on Dan Hubbert’s CCTV creeping into the driveway during the night and taking scissors to the flashing decorations.

Wrapped up in an oversized coat and hiding behind a hood, she keeps an eye out for onlookers before severing the wires and then making her escape.

Dan, 41, of Cottingham,

Hull, posted the video online and asked people what he should do.

He said: “So it turns out some old gal doesn’t like my Christmas lights. What should I do? Ring the old bill or let her go free? All she needed to do was pop round and ask me to turn them off during the night. Crazy world, eh?

“It’s out of order, I know that, but just seems crazy ringing police for it.”

One reader who saw the post said: “What a Scrooge.” Dad-of-two Dan pointed out the elderly vandal could have been seriously injured. He explained: “It could have caused an electrical fault or even electrocuted her.”

Interviewed later, he admitted he would have reported the incident to authorities if the culprit was younger.

He added: “If it was youths, I would’ve been straight on the blower to the police – but she’s old.

“Everyone wants me to ring the police on her. She should pay for them.”

He said the lights would cost about £20 to replace.

But Dan admitted he was not too worried given the nature of the crime.

He added: “I’m trying to find the funny side. [My children] just think it’s funny as well. It is quite funny to see her toddle along and cut them.”

Dan said he would have had no problem turning the lights off during the night if the woman had told him they were causing her a problem.

What will I do? Ring the old bill or let her go free?
