New mum collapses and dies on stairs after getting lost in hospital
Woman went missing after going to visit baby
A MUM has died after apparently getting lost in hospital and collapsing on the stairs while visiting her newborn son.
Amanda Cox, 34, is understood to have suffered a haemorrhage.
It is thought she may have become disorientated on the way back to her ward after visiting her son, Murray, in the neonatal unit.
Staff launched a search after Amanda was reported missing from the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh at around 5pm on Monday.
She was found in a rarely used stairwell around 10pm that evening. Amanda – who had given SEARCH Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh birth to Murray, weighing 3lb 7oz, four days earlier – died a short time later. She had pre-eclampsia during her pregnancy, which can cause high blood pressure.
Amanda, who was from Peebles, in the Scottish Borders, was a keen darts player.
In 2016, she reached the final 32 in the Women’s World Masters. Police said in a statement yesterday: “The death is being treated as unexplained, but not suspicious, and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal [Scotland’s public prosecutor].
“Our thoughts are with Amanda’s family and friends.”
Jim Crombie, deputy chief executive of NHS Lothian, said: “A police investigation is ongoing and we are assisting with their inquiries. My thoughts and sympathies are with the family of Amanda Cox at this sad time.”
