ENGLAND dug deep to beat Olympic champions Argentina and reach the World Cup semifinal.

Their thrilling 3-2 win, at a packed Kalinga Stadium, was the first over the highly-rated South Americans for 20 years.

Harry Martin netted England’s winner in the 49th minute during an incredible spell, which saw three goals in four minutes.

Danny Kerry’s side then held on for a nerve-jangling finale, while Argentina finished the game with nine men.

Midfielder Martin said: “It was a massive team performance. We dug in and didn’t have much in the legs and just left it all out there.” Man-of-the-match Liam Ansell added: “We put in a stellar performance.” England will now play either Belgium or Germany in Saturday’s semifinals.

The last time an England side reached the World Cup final came at home in 1986.
