No more life in this zombie PM.. Just give up the ghost

- BRIAN READE

WHEN Margaret Thatcher knew she’d lost her party she grabbed her handbag and fled in tears.

When John Major knew he’d lost the war with his Eurosceptics he hobbled on, a dead man walking, until we turfed him out. Theresa May has lost her party, war and country, yet on she staggers from another car crash, a dead woman dancing, a zombie at her own wake.

Even abroad she is mocked for being so out of her depth her shoes almost touch the bed of the Channel.

What a choice she gave her MPs at the meeting before last night’s vote: “I know I’m awful but better the awful leader you know than the awful leader you don’t.”

She may have won that confidence vote but how can Britain and Europe have any confidence left in her? It’s like an insurance rep asking if you have the confidence to take out a new policy after he burned down your

house and refused to pay out. Her speech yesterday morning was empty platitudes from a PM the country never warmed to and now either dislikes or pities.

Her premiership has never recovered from that appalling general election campaign and died during her speech at last year’s conference when the party slogan disintegrated behind her.

That party, like this nation, is

split and instead of leading both with a single-minded drive, she cowers in fear of a handful of hard-right ideological sociopaths. She’s a failure. Everyone in Europe who cares, knows it. So does she. What’s the point in carrying on?

She may have survived but she is arguably the most damaged and powerless PM in history. A zombie leader dancing in the dark with a zombie government.
