Old prison up for sale with £1 price tag

- BY TOM BONNETT

OFFER Rory Stewart MP A MINISTER desperate to sell a former prison is offering it for just £1.

Rory Stewart wants Isle of Wight council to take over HMP Camp Hill and build houses on the site.

And the MP is so keen on the idea he is willing to stump up the £1 himself.

Prisons Minister Mr Stewart said: “We’re very keen for the council to have it for them to build affordable houses.

“We’re currently offering it to them for a pound and they’re still not certain.

“I’d be happy to pay them a pound to have it.”

Camp Hill, built in 1912, held 500 inmates before it was closed in 2013 due to cost-cutting.

The council said it will assess the site for “any risks or liabilities” before agreeing to purchase it. WORRYING Breast scan
