Boss delivers post van gift thief to cops

Beachy Head medic gets hearty tribute

- BY LOUIE SMITH

A ROYAL Mail boss saved Christmas after stopping a thief getting away with a postal van full of presents.

James MacDonald, 29, gave chase after a postman called in to say his vehicle had been stolen at knifepoint as he did his rounds.

He spotted the van as he drove round to check on the worker on Wednesday.

James said: “I chased him in a black BMW, so he might have thought it was an unmarked police car.

“I was on the phone to 999 giving street names.”

The thief dumped the van at a delivery office, where he was cornered.

Police said a man was in custody. James added: “It’s people’s presents. I didn’t want any to go missing.”

The postman, targeted in Mullion, Cornwall, was not harmed. THE patients and colleagues of a top heart surgeon who was found dead at Beachy Head are raising cash to boost his hospital in his memory.

Police have said Jagdip Sidhu’s death last month at the cliffs in Sussex, a notorious suicide spot, is not being treated as suspicious.

The 47-year-old, of Longfield, Kent, was lead cardiologist at Darent Valley Hospital and in 2008 he spoke of his pride at doing the centre’s first coronary angioplasty.

Colleague Dr Samer Ghozlan launched the Justgiving appeal to improve cardiac facilities “as a tribute for the kind of person Dr Sidhu was”.

As of yesterday, more than £2,700 had been raised from around 130 supporters.

Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust said: “Dr Sidhu was an immensely popular and wellrespected member of the hospital’s staff. He will be remembered for his kindness and compassion.”

Mr Sidhu’s death was referred to the coroner.
