Jail was ‘like rehab’ for rugby ace

-

A RUGBY league star jailed after a high speed car chase with police – who tasered him six times as they tried to arrest him – has said prison was “like rehab”.

Scott Moore, 30, got 23 months’ jail in March for dangerous driving and assaulting officers.

He is now free and has described how he coped in jail.

He told BBC Sport: “I was quite happy to be on my own – it was a bit of soul-searching after everything that had happened. In a way it was quite like a rehab.”

Moore made friends on his wing, worked in the gym for £18 a week and played badminton and tennis. But he did miss the birth of his daughter.

He said: “I definitely paid some prices for being in there. The only time I’d meet her was in visits, so just having her on my own when I was released was amazing.”

Moore became the youngest ever Super League player when he played for St Helens, aged 16.

Now with Rochdale, he said his rise to fame at a young age led him to drink in the off-season. He said: “I hit the booze too hard, one day just melted into another.

“I didn’t notice anything wrong at the time. Looking back, there were a few alarm bells ringing but I didn’t take notice of them.”

The video of his arrest in October 2016 is uncomfortable viewing. He grunted and growled as police struggled to arrest him for 50 minutes after a car chase.

The 15stone, 5ft 10in hooker was hit six times with the 50,000volt stun gun, but kept getting back to his feet to charge at police. He grabbed the Taser, pointing it in the face of an officer, snarling: “You’re getting it now.”

He said: “I just look at it as if some idiot is doing it, but the idiot is me. I can’t take it back.”
