Kop of the world

-

THERE is a lot of snide mockery as Liverpool fans revel in their current fortunes.

Understandable, to some extent. On my social-media timeline on Wednesday morning, Alisson (right) was the greatest goalkeeper the world has ever seen, Virgil van Dijk the planet’s best central defender, Andy Robertson (below) a shoo-in for a Champions League best-of XI, etc, etc, etc.

There were plenty queuing up to remind Liverpool supporters that they have won nothing under Jurgen Klopp and to warn them about the dangers of premature celebration.

Bah, humbug. If you cannot enjoy the time this Liverpool manager and this Liverpool team is giving you right now, there is no point in being a fan. Getting carried away is what it is all about.

WHATEVER your take on Team Sky, however sceptical you are of their marginal gains, the jiffy bags, Bradley Wiggins’ (right) therapeutic use exemption or Chris Froome’s asthma medication, no matter how much you are riled by their arrogance and financial muscle, they have given us some epic sporting moments.

In the fullness of time, history might have to be drastically rewritten but as Sky announced its withdrawal from cycling, it will leave a legacy that will be impossible to taint.

They helped get this country – its men, women and children – on its bike.
