This epic period drama set in Mexico in the 1970s is an intimate work which requires patience and commitment from the audience. Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira play Cleo and Sofia, respectively an indigenous Mexican housemaid and her wealthy middleclass employer. A deftly layered and richly textured exploration of class, race and gender politics, it’s tremendous at suggesting how lives are being shaped by powerful global forces which they have no control over. If your taste in film runs to post-war Italian neo-realism this will be right up your strada.
