on last night’s telly

He sampled delicacies... deep-fried pig frog’s legs anyone?

Billy Connolly’s Ultimate World Tour, ITV ★★★★

For a minute last night, I thought Billy Connolly was about to wade into the Brexit debate. “People are pretty much the same wherever you go,” he said. “We’ve got to get over this fear of the foreigner.”

However, Billy was simply talking about travel. And if the events of the past few weeks have left you wanting to get away from it all, this one-off retrospective of his travelogues will have given you some good ideas. Although Billy hates the thought of people feeling sorry for him, it was of course tinged with sadness. Billy is suffering from Parkinson’s disease and with his recent decision to give up live performing it’s hard to imagine him undertaking any more gruelling travel trips.

Not that he was complaining. His take on his 25 years of seeing the world on our behalf was simple and upbeat: “I’m very proud of it. The world’s a joyous place and it should be treated as such. It’s supposed to be fun.”

As he looked back at his previous journeys, he also found the time and energy to take us on a tour of his new home state of Florida. He went fishing – and kept

up his proud record of never having caught anything on camera.

He sampled the local delicacies – deep-fried pig frog’s legs, anyone?

And he met all kinds of interesting people, including crocodile trapper Chris Guinto, who relocates crocodiles that have strayed too close to people’s backyards.

The biggest crocodile that Chris has ever caught was one that had been spotted wandering around one of Florida’s many golf courses.

I just hope he nicknamed it Donald.
