Mourinho says silverware is the ONLY measure of success
JOSE MOURINHO taunted Jurgen Klopp ahead of their showdown tomorrow by telling the Liverpool boss that success is judged on trophies.
Liverpool are unbeaten, top of the Premier League, and 16 points ahead of sixth-placed United, whose poor start to the season has left a top-four spot as their only realistic target.
United boss Mourinho has won two trophies – the League Cup and
Europa League – in two-anda-half years at Old Trafford, while Klopp is still waiting for his first piece of silverware after three years at Liverpool.
Ahead of their Anfield clash, Mourinho said: “I think trophies matter, especially when you clearly say the objective is to win a trophy.
“To say it’s not is not very intelligent.
“But I think Jurgen has said already they want to win the Premier League, and that is their objective this season.”
Klopp accepts he will ultimately be judged on the trophies he wins but said: “If only the best counts, and effort doesn’t count, then life is s***. If you only love the game if you are first in the table at the end, then all the others have to stop loving it. You have to accept that there are losers.
“There’s only one spot. You can do pretty much everything right but in the end one team can do a bit more right and you don’t get it. If people say the Champions League campaign last season was not a success because we didn’t win the final then I cannot change that. But the ride was brilliant.”
