THAT Philip Ham­mond’s com­pany con­trib­uted a pa­thetic £5,964 tax on £1.6mil­lion prof­its raises dis­turb­ing ques­tions about the wealthy Chan­cel­lor’s com­mit­ment to firms pay­ing fair.

The measly 0.4% ef­fec­tive rate might be le­gal but it is way be­low the 20% im­posed on a bus driver, nurse or call cen­tre worker.

Ham­mond can have no com­plaints when peo­ple ask if he is re­ally go­ing to crack down on loaded in­di­vid­u­als and big firms sidestep­ping tax when his per­sonal in­ter­ests ap­pear to clash with the na­tional in­ter­est.
