AROUND 30 tonnes of stinking rubbish sits rotting on farmland where it was dumped last week.
The 20ft by 10ft pile and another of similar size found nearby have sparked calls for tougher fly-tipping penalties.
The waste is thought to be linked to one source as it was already processed.
Police and Crime Commissioner David Lloyd said: “The scale and audacity of this crime is shocking.”
The huge mound was discovered on farmland in Barwick, Herts, on Monday. The other had been dumped on Bishop’s Stortford High School playing field in Much Hadham, Herts, the previous week. Police said an angle grinder had been used to cut off a padlock to gain access. Local authorities are dealing with nearly one million fly-tipping incidents a year, according to Keep Britain Tidy.
Chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: “Those who break the law should be punished through significant fines but 90% issued are less than £1,000.”
