TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE

Just before he died in 2013, Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47, wrote to the head of the Russian Orthodox church saying he regretted creating the weapon.

I thought of him when I listened to Sir Tim Berners-Lee who gave an interview to mark 30 years since he invented the World Wide Web.

Sir Tim sounded equally troubled saying: “I’m very concerned about nastiness and misinformation spreading.”

There’s no doubt it has been a force for good, but I agree the internet hasn’t helped the world become a nicer place.
