on last night’s TV

Kilimanjaro: The Bigger Red Nose Climb, BBC1 ★★★★

Over on BBC1 last night Dan Walker was halfway up Africa’s highest mountain being warned by medics his brain was at risk of dangerous swelling.

Normally I’d imagine Dan’s head only gets bigger when the TV ratings come in and he finds out how far BBC Breakfast is ahead of Piers Morgan’s mob on ITV.

So we knew this was serious – and it really brought home how much of a risk Dan and the other eight celebs were taking.

Such risks might also explain why some stars get so prickly when people question their motives for taking part in charity appeals, whether it’s David Lammy MP criticising Stacey Dooley’s unintentionally patronising Instagram posts or viewers sitting at home tomorrow night wondering why a celebrity is asking them to donate money while promoting their latest record/movie/DVD.

It doesn’t make those criticisms less valid, of course. On balance though, I’d still like to think Comic Relief does more good than harm.

This film was worth a tenner for the shot of Ed Balls’ Stan Laurel morning hair on day two alone.

It was also nice to see a personable side in camp to Strictly Come Dancing ice queen Shirley Ballas.

But the highlight was seeing the girls from Little Mix tackle a challenge they don’t often deal with on TV. Being fully clothed.
