Poverty is ‘new norm’ for 4.1m kids

-

CHILD poverty is the new norm in parts of Britain, with 4.1 million kids now affected, charities claim.

The number has risen half a million from 3.6 million in 2010, a study by End Child Poverty shows.

The Government is urged to “respond with a credible child poverty strategy” by reversing cuts to services and reforming Universal Credit.

Anna Feuchtwang, from the ECP coalition, added: “In many areas, growing up in poverty is not the exception, it’s the rule.”

The figure is projected to rise to 5.1 million by 2022.

Margaret Greenwood, the Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, said: “It is time for the Government to wake up to this crisis.”
