Idling drivers may be hit by on spot fines
DRIVERS who leave their engine running while stuck in traffic could get instant fines in a crackdown on car pollution.
The Government is considering Westminster council’s call for new powers to issue immediate penalties to drivers previously caught idling.
Officers there currently give fines between £20 and £80 only if a driver ignores a warning and continues to idle for at least a minute.
Nickie Aiken, Tory leader of the West London council, said: “[For] persistent idling we need to be able to send a message.”
