Saints fear Devils duo

Jake the gem as he piles on the misery for Rhinos

- BY GARETH WALKER TOO HOT

HUDDERSFIELD backrower Joe Wardle says the Giants can take confidence from their 42-8 demolition of the Robins in March.

Wardle said: “It just shows we know what we can do against them.

“If we get our plan right and put everything together, then, hopefully, we can score a few points.

“Hull KR love throwing the ball about.

“They might not be the most consistent team, but they test people out – and probably should have beat St Helens recently.

“We don’t want to be near the bottom, so we have to beat the teams around us.”

7.45pm SAINTS coach Justin Holbrook is fully aware of the threat from Red Devils half-backs Jackson Hastings and Robert Lui.

Holbrook said: “They had a great, dominant win over Warrington a couple of weeks back and went over to Catalans and thumped them over there, which nobody has been able to do.

“So they are a real dangerous attacking team and they execute their plays really well.

“Through Jackson Hastings and Robert Lui in the halves – they are the dominant playmakers in their side and do a really good job for them.” JAKE TRUEMAN put on a show to heap more misery on crisis club Leeds.

The talented Tigers stand-off created two tries with his clever distribution and scored one himself as Daryl Powell’s side ended a run of four straight defeats.

Victory also helped to ease the pain of a golden-point loss at Headingley seven weeks earlier.

And it leaves the wounded Rhinos with more questions than answers as they stumble from one disappointing defeat to another.

Dumped out of the Challenge Cup by Championship Bradford last week after sacking coach Dave Furner, interim boss Richard Agar called for more effort from his squad. He got that in the first half, without the eight-time Super League champions ever looking like winners.

But they fell apart again midway through the second period as Castleford – who also had a try double from back-rower Jesse SeneLefao – eased to victory.

Leeds were hardly helped by the early withdrawal of Tui Lolohea through injury, forcing a reshuffle that saw back-rower Liam Sutcliffe switch to full-back.

Sutcliffe gave his side an early lead after his break from Cameron Smith’s offload led to a penalty for holding down.

But that was it from the home side as an attacking force for 20 minutes as the Tigers took control.

Sene-Lefao twisted over from close range before home skipper Kallum Watkins was sin-binned for a dangerous tip tackle on Greg Eden. Moments later Castleford took advantage of the extra man as Eden strolled over from Trueman’s smart cut-out pass.

The contest was all but over when Trueman laid another try on for Sene-Lefao five minutes after the restart, before the Rhinos stirred briefly. They reduced the gap to 10 points when Richie Myler sent Matt Parcell over, only to shoot themselves in the foot shortly after.

Trent Merrin was penalised for dissent and the Tigers pounced, sub Jordan Rankin kicking for James Clare to score. Castleford rubbed salt in the wound when Peter Mata’utia released Eden directly from a kick return and Trueman supported for his deserved try.

The Tigers can now refocus their play-off bid, while Leeds have a relegation showdown with London Broncos at Magic Weekend.
