POLLY SAYS...

It’s in the genes. My gran ran over a man, twice

-

QUESTIONABLE (I’m being polite) driving runs in my family. It’s in the genes. My mum’s mum was something of a local celebrity because of her whatever the opposite of prowess is on the roads.

My grandma had the distinction of having run the same man over twice. She knocked him down, and he was shaken, but got back up – a decision he would quickly come to regret.

My grandma was so horrified that her entire body froze, right down to her foot on the accelerator pedal, so she chased him down the road a bit before hitting him a second time. When she visited him in hospital, he was not that pleased to see her.

My mum’s driving has always been... interesting, too. Her main personality traits of severe impatience and the belief that she is always right don’t exactly add up to tranquil journeys. But I’m impressed she took it upon herself to get her competence behind the wheel tested – not to mention fully stunned that she passed with such flying colours.

She has only mentioned how well she did 219 times a day since it happened, too.

I’m lucky that I have bucked the family curse – I am definitely an excellent driver. I mean, I’ve never run anyone over more than once.
