Whales talk in ‘whispers’
WHALES and their calves “whisper” to each other to avoid being found by predators, a study has found.
Southern right whale calves are often preyed on by killer whales.
But a study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology found mothers and calves stay close in noisy surf and call softly to avoid detection.
Mia Nielsen from Aarhus University, Denmark, said: “This acoustic crypsis may have evolved as an antipredator strategy.”
