GP worker in £700k fraud

- ADOPTED BY LAURA RIDGE ADOPTED BY JILL and TONY ALLEN

A “CRUEL” doctors’ surgery manager has been jailed for stealing nearly £700,000 to feed her gambling habit.

Karen Evans, 44, took £582,265.65 from Failsworth Group Practice, near Oldham, forcing four of the five GPs to leave.

Police found Evans, who admitted fraud, also stole £77,000 from another surgery where she worked.

She was jailed for three years and four months at Manchester’s Minshull Street crown court. Cocker spaniel Fozzie found his forever home before he’d even left the This Morning studios – after winning over one of the show’s crew members.

Production assistant Laura Ridge gave the six-week-old puppy a cuddle after his TV appearance in March and immediately knew she wanted to take him home.

Fozzie was born at the Many Tears Animal Rescue centre in South Wales.

Laura, 37, said: “I filled in the online form. We collected him a week later. He’s doing really well, although he wants to eat and tear up everything.

“The only one who isn’t so keen in our house is the cat.” Viewers were moved by the plight of Scooter, who was found dying on a road in Bacau, Romania, after being hit by a car.

The three-year-old, who can’t use his back legs due to spinal damage, was brought to the UK by Sadie’s Stray Dog Rescue.

After Scooter charmed TV host Eamonn Holmes in November, 20 people were keen to adopt him but were put off by his disability. Dog fosterer Jill Allen finally gave him a home.

Jill, 60, of Wokingham, Berks said of the mongrel: “He’s a really loving dog and really cheerful.

“He zooms around with more energy than most, whether on walks with his wheels or scooting around the house on his bottom.”
