THE BIG PICK

- INSPIRED LEGACY

And this year McDonald’s was keen to hear from you to help identify the areas where litter is a real problem, so that together we could help make a difference where it matters most.

Town centres and high streets were the top choices for many of you who simply wanted a helping hand to clear the streets where you go to eat, shop and socialise.

But it wasn’t just the busiest areas that got the vote. Many of you were also inspired by the campaign to get in touch about clearing up local playgrounds and parks.

And McDonald’s was only too happy to help out.

As part of our partnership campaign more than 370 dedicated employees donned tabards and headed out with their litter pickers to transform 25 areas across the UK. JENNIFER GODWIN MCDONALD’S VOLUNTEER

And together they collected a total of 450 bags of litter.

The month-long campaign is just one of the many proactive steps being taken by McDonald’s to combat rubbish. More than 400 litter picks have already taken place so far this year as part of the wider anti-litter campaign called Keep Up The Clean Up.

This project continues McDonald’s’ legacy of tackling rubbish in its communities, regardless of its origin, which dates back to 1982 when the restaurant chain first started cleaning up the streets.

McDonald’s litter patrols and clean-up events see staff and volunteers walk around 150,000 miles a year as they set about keeping the UK tidy.

Each McDonald’s restaurant carries out at least three litter patrols per day in their local community, with employees covering a total of 3,000 miles every week – the distance of five marathons a year per restaurant.

McDonald’s ambition is to send zero waste to landfill by 2020 and many of its restaurants have already successfully achieved this. But its commitment doesn’t stop there. McDonald’s has also pledged to save energy and fuel, with its entire UK delivery fleet running on biodiesel, almost half of which comes from its own used cooking oil.

Jennifer Godwin, a Business Manager at McDonald’s who joined one of the Keep Up the Clean Up events, said: “We had a great time. It’s always fun to get out and about with the people you work with, especially if it’s for a good cause.

“We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for the area they wanted us to clean up – it’s great to know we were making a difference where it’s really needed.”
