There’s been a fall in stroke deaths

Fewer people are dying of stroke – in fact half as many as 10 years ago.

An Oxford team has analysed data from NHS England and found that between 2001 and 2010, the number of stroke deaths fell from roughly 42,000 per annum to 27,000.

That equates to a 55% reduction in the death rate once adjusted for the ageing population.

More people are surviving, but also fewer people are having strokes. Strangely enough, there was a slight increase in the number of strokes in people under 55.

This is probably due to the rising rates of diabetes and obesity. Strokes are still the UK’s single biggest cause of disability.
