1932: Yorkshire spinner Hedley Verity took all 10 Nottingham­shire wickets for just 10 runs at Headingley. He died in World War Two after being injured during the Allied invasion of Sicily. 1969: Tony Jacklin became the first home winner of the Open since Max Faulkner in 1951.

1998: France beat Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup final with two goals from Zinedine Zidane and one from Emmanuel Petit.

2001: Argentina internatio­nal Juan Sebastian Veron completed his £28.1million move from Lazio to Manchester United.
