Corbyn speaks out but is it all too late?

- Edited by

■ As a Brexiteer and Labour Party supporter, I am happy to see Labour has at last climbed down off the fence and decided to support a second referendum.

When I voted to leave the EU, I was never told that dozy Boris would be leading us into a disaster of a Brexit where, once again, it will be the vulnerable who pay for the Tory Party’s incompetence.

I still think we should respect the result of the first referendum, but feel the only democratic solution is to call a general election, let the parties put forward their Brexit proposals and let the ballot box decide.

■ I wonder if the “Remoaners” will be patting each other on the back as much after the Labour Party is consigned to the political wilderness following the next general election? I’m sure they’re all as proud as punch at the moment, thinking they have won a battle with Labour backing a second vote.

But let’s see how proud they are when the Tories win another five years in power as the disaffected working class who voted Leave accept they’ve been betrayed and are politically homeless. Rob Sutton Warrington, Cheshire

■ Has anyone noticed we now hear very little about immigration in discussions about Brexit? Politicians know full well they aren’t able to reduce this by much for a number of reasons – the falling UK birth rate and those in work being unable to support the growing number of retirees.

Since immigration was probably a decisive factor in 2016, Labour is right to support a second referendum. We need democratic agreement from the electorate that they still want to leave, even knowing it won’t change the immigration figures much. Clive Osman, Nuneaton, Warks ■ So Jeremy Corbyn has agreed to a second referendum on any Tory Brexit deal or no deal. I strongly believe that statement has just lost the Labour Party millions of votes.

It’s time to kick out Corbyn before it’s too late. The hateful Tories love him because they know Labour will never win an election with him in charge.

■ I have followed the issue of Brexit closely and all of the discussions about whether we should leave with or without a deal.

I am now of the opinion that those who are favouring a deal are the sensible ones who realise that this country could not survive independently in the outside world. Chris Grogan, Skelmersdale, Lancs ■ Those pushing for a further referendum on any final deal might claim that it’s about democracy, but really it is about nothing except getting Brexit weakened or thrown out altogether. To trumpet it as some form of kindness to the voting public is both patronising and transparently untrue. Stefan Badham Portsmouth
