Greece is hit by powerful earthquake
PANIC swept Athens as an earthquake sent people fleeing tall buildings and running into the street.
The powerful 5.1-magnitude tremor struck yesterday afternoon around 14 miles from the Greek capital, knocking out phone lines and power.
A dozen people had to be rescued after getting trapped in lifts and there were reports of injuries from falling debris.
Locals described televisions shaking and objects falling from bookshelves.
One tourist was hurt by falling plaster and an empty building collapsed.
The anti-earthquake protection agency, Efthymios Lekkas, said: “There is no reason for concern. The capital’s buildings are built to withstand a much stronger earthquake.”
