Fruit stall in a London market in the 1930s The market in Barnsley is one of the oldest in Britain, dating back to 1249. It has survived difficult times, from rationing during the war to being dug up to build air raid shelters.
It has now been given a new lease of life as part of a wider £180million redevelopment of the town centre.
The six-day-a-week market has returned to its refurbished home but is bigger and better, with 100 indoor stalls and 40 outside.
