‘Gift of sight’ plea to dying

-

TERMINALLY ill patients may be approached about donating their eyes for transplant after death.

Families are usually approached after death but an NHS study now aims to establish whether talking to patients directly could increase donations.

Helen Gillan, of NHS Blood and Transplant, which has a 20% shortfall at eye banks, said: “We need more donors to help give the gift of sight.”

Presumed consent will be introduced next spring.
