Tom’s shot at Top Gun 2
Maverick star Tom Cruise surprises fans at Comic-Con & unveils movie trailer for sequel... 33yrs after original
TOM Cruise made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con where he unveiled a trailer for the sequel to his movie Top Gun, which was released more than 30 years ago.
Top Gun: Maverick sees Cruise, 57, revisit the brilliant but reckless pilot Pete Mitchell, now mentoring the next generation of aces.
The trailer shows Mitchell, nicknamed Maverick, pulling off some incredible aerial stunts at the controls of a US Navy jet fighter.
“Everything you see in this film is for real,” he told the San Diego audience. “We’re working with the Navy, all of the flying you see in this picture is real, I really wanted to give you all an experience of what it is to be inside that aircraft.
“To me, Top Gun is about competition, it’s about family, it’s about sacrifice, it’s about heroism, it’s about aviation.
“It’s a love letter to aviation.” In the trailer, a commanding officer played by Ed Harris growls: “Thirty-plus years of service. Combat medals. Citations. The only man to shoot down three
enemy planes in the last 40 years. Yet you can’t get a promotion, you won’t retire and despite your best efforts, you refuse to die.
“You should at least be a twostar admiral by now, yet here you are, Captain. Why is that?”
“It’s one of life’s mysteries, Sir,” Maverick coolly responds.
The clip also offers a quick glimpse of new cast members Miles Teller – as the son of Maverick’s late wingman, Goose, played by Anthony Edwards – Jon Hamm and Jennifer Connelly.
There is no role for Kelly McGillis, who played Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, Maverick’s love interest in the original film.
Fans of the 1986 movie, which cemented Cruise’s Hollywood heart-throb status, will not be disappointed as the new movie embraces the original’s fondness for shirtless beach shots and highspeed motorcycle rides.
Top Gun, directed by the late Tony Scott, won an Academy Award for best original song for Take My Breath Away by the band Berlin.
It also featured Meg Ryan, ER’s Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer – who is also back for the sequel but not seen in the trailer.
Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled to be released on June 26, 2020.
