HARRY FROM THE HALFWAY LINE
(AND IT’S AGAINST AN EX-ARSENAL KEEPER!)
HARRY KANE scored a 53-yard wonder goal against Juventus to embarrass ex-Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny – just as Nayim did David Seaman in 1995.
The late goal from the halfway line handed Spurs a 3-2 International Champions Cup victory in Singapore.
NOT many strikers upstage Cristiano Ronaldo – but Harry Kane put the Juventus star in the shade in Singapore.
He picked up a loose ball and unleashed a shot from just inside the Juve half that sailed over substitute keeper Wojciech Szczesny and into the net to give Tottenham a last-gasp win against the Italian champions.
It was reminiscent of Nayim’s goal for Spurs against Arsenal in 1995 and puts Kane in an elite club of England players to have scored from halfway, with David Beckham (bottom) and Wayne Rooney members.
“It was nice to see that one go in because I’ve had a few in my career where I’ve tried it and it’s gone over the bar or wide,” said Kane.
“Thankfully it’s one of those where I’ve hit it and as soon as I looked up it was heading on target.
“I’ve not seen any texts from Wayne or David yet, but Wayne has done it a few times so I’ve got some way to go to catch him.
“You don’t practice that, no. It’s just one of those things that’s instinctive on the pitch.
“There was a chance in the first half where Gianluigi Buffon was off his line and half the bench told Sonny to shoot from inside his own half. So it was in my mind from then and it was just one of them – it’s the last minute of the game and you have loads of defenders around you.
“Lucas Moura did well to win it back and it just fell nicely so I thought why not have a try? And I knew as soon as I hit it that it had a chance.
“You try it as a kid, of course, when you watch Beckham and Rooney do it you try it yourself. And who knows, hopefully it will be the start of me getting a few of them.”
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino insisted it was the performance that mattered, not the win.
But the way his young side took the International Champions Cup game to an experienced Juve team, playing with pace, energy and confidence, was impressive.
Striker Troy Parrott, centre-back Japhet Tanganga and midfielder Oliver Skipp all looked comfortable.
Ronaldo had let Spurs off the hook by wasting first-half chances before Erik Lamela put the north Londoners ahead in the 30th minute.
The Portugal star made amends by equalising with a deflected 56th-minute shot.
Gonzalo Higuain had Juve in front on the hour but Spurs’ £65million record signing Tanguy Ndombele came off the bench for his debut and his first touch was a cool pass to Moura, who made it 2-2. But deep into injury time, Kane stole the show in spectacular fashion.
