‘Depression helped me to pen Poldark’
‘STIGMA’ Debbie Horsfield POLDARK writer Debbie Horsfield says her postnatal depression helped her to write about mental health issues which affect the show’s characters.
Both Ross and Demelza Poldark and Dwight and Caroline Enys have dealt with bereavement in the BBC1 drama, while Dr Enys had post-traumatic stress after going to war.
Mother-of-four Horsfield, 64, said: “After the birth of my first child, it didn’t occur to me to talk about the permanent fog I felt I was wading through, let alone consider it a form of post-natal depression.”
Writing in the Radio Times, she added: “It gave me an insight into the challenges involved in acknowledging and addressing the stigma.”

The former England player was joined by a group of pals on the street outside the Dickens Inn on Teesside University campus. Johnson was sentenced to six years in prison in March 2016 after he was found guilty of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
He was jailed at HMP Moorland in Doncaster, South Yorks, and released on parole in March to live at his new £2million mansion in Castle Eden, Co Durham.
Just days after he was freed, he wore a £100,000 luxury Richard Mille watch while he and his sister Faye, 25, took dogs for a walk.
He was in Fresh Ego Kid tracksuit bottoms at the time.
One enraged observer said: “Adam Johnson straight out of the slammer and straight into some Fresh Ego Kid garms. Says it all.”
His former girlfriend, Stacey Flounders, 30, is the mother of his four-year-old daughter. She has insisted she will not take him back.
